La Rioja’s Calendar: Must-See Annual Events for the Wine Tourist

📅 La Rioja Beyond Wine: Culture, History, and Celebration

La Rioja Beyond Wine: Culture, History, and Celebration

La Rioja is famous for its wines, but its annual calendar is packed with festivals and events that blend medieval history, gastronomic tradition, and, of course, wine culture. If you are planning your trip, these are the key moments you won’t want to miss.

❄️ Winter (January – March): The Silence of the Barrel

Winter is the time for the vineyards to rest and an opportunity to visit wineries with more calm and depth.

March – Rioja Alavesa Days: An event usually held in March, where wineries in Rioja Alavesa (an area with cutting-edge wineries and medieval towns like Laguardia) open their doors for special tastings and pairing menus. It is ideal for young wine enthusiasts.

Focus: Tranquil Tastings and Gastronomic Routes in Logroño and Vitoria.

🌷 Spring (April – June): The Rebirth of the Vine

With the budding of the vine, the landscape is painted bright green, and the major fairs and festivals begin.

April/May – Wine and Gastronomy Fair (Logroño): An excellent opportunity to taste local wines and products in the capital, with fewer crowds than in summer.

June (Late) – The Wine Battle of Haro (Batalla del Vino): This is perhaps the most eccentric and famous event. Thousands of people gather in the Riscos de Bilibio for a friendly “battle” where the main weapon is red wine. It is pure celebration and tradition, culminating with the descent to Haro to continue the party.

Heads up! This is a massive event that requires transportation planning.

☀️ Summer (July – August): Patron Saint Festivals and Tourism

Summer brings a more active pace of life, town festivals, and the start of preparations for the harvest.

July – Patron Saint Festivals in Key Towns: Many towns like Laguardia, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and Briones celebrate their summer festivals. These are perfect moments to experience local culture, music, and traditions.

August (Late) – Early Harvest Transfers: This is the moment when the first wineries begin picking, especially in Rioja Oriental. The landscape begins to transform.

🍂 Autumn (September – November): The Great Celebration

Autumn is the high season par excellence, dominated by the Harvest and its biggest festival.

September (Late) – Rioja Wine Harvest Festival (Fiesta de la Vendimia Riojana – Logroño): Coinciding with San Mateo, Logroño dresses up for the occasion. The grape stomping, the offering of the first must to the Virgen de Valvanera, and music festivals are the centre of the celebration.

September/October – The Harvest (Vendimia): The period where most wineries are in full swing. It is the best time to see the wine-making process live (check our specific article on the Harvest).
